Sticky: Intro post
Dec. 17th, 2018 10:12 pmMan. I just realized I've written a lot of intro posts. Seems like every few years we pack up and move to a new site.
Well, this one was my bad--when livejournal died, I had the chance to migrate over here, but I went to tumblr instead, and my productivity dropped.
Oddly enough, no one else has taken my name in all these years.
I am an old anime fan. I branched out into American sci-fi and cult shows a few years back, then came back to anime. Into American comics lately, but I don't really have an area of concentration anymore.
My AO3 account is sparse, but still alive. More recently, I ran fic-rec-a-day on tumblr, and I did manage to do a fic rec everyday for a year. Since then it's slowed down a bit, but I really enjoy writing fic recs. I'm currently active on Pillowfort. I've got old, archived accounts on Livejournal as sakura-no-miko and zetsubou-hana.
So, I think most of this account will be fic recs and fic related stuff. Mostly archival, for myself. I might get more active later; we'll see.
A few important notes: I read, write, and rec all sorts of fic, including NSFW. There may be NSFW text on this blog, but it will be under a cut and I do write warnings for all content. I am also a multi-shipper, so I really don't want to listen to ship-war wank.
I'm pretty easy going, I think, so that's really the only thing I strongly want to avoid.
Please note: because this is an archiving journal, there may be periods of rapid updates. Apologies if I accidentally flood anyone's feed. I backdate my archived entries, so the tags are probably the most effective way to search. Links should be working to the best of my ability.
Have a nice day!
A Jojo's Bizarre rec list
Sep. 29th, 2019 08:11 pmWelp. I wanted to see the origin of the memes, and now I am myself becoming part of the memes.
Yeah, I finally started watching Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. And let me tell you, I have a definite thing for the ensemble and part crossover fics. It’s gonna take me a bit to write proper recs for all of them, but, in the meantime, I really want to share all these stories that have made me happy, intrigued, and, in a couple of cases, deeply angry at how close we came to a happier ending but damn it everyone is just too flawed and broken to manage it.
I think I came out almost half-and-half between gen fic and ship fic, so there should be something here to please everybody.

Batfamily rec list
Sep. 24th, 2019 08:42 pmToday’s topic is the Bat family.
No real reason, just Bat family fics I’ve enjoyed. Admittedly I have a weakness for Jason Todd fics, so he’s possibly a little over-represented. Mostly gen, ensemble fics featuring two or more Batmen, Batwomen, Robins, and the like.

Bruno better be proud. Abbacchio's really trying to be a better person.

My only price for sharing this information is the pleasure of your company. I would treasure a chance to see how alike your father you are and how different as well. From the swiftness of your rise and the heights of your ambition, I suspect I will find the spark that this world has lacked since January of 1989."
A letter arrives for Giorno Giovanna from one of his father's old friends, and a request to meet. He accepts both.

Fic rec - Heart Lines
May. 20th, 2019 08:10 pmTitle: Heart Lines

Warnings: background character death by childbirth, attempted lynch mob, anti-magic prejudice, character injury
Other notes: au, soulmates, romantic & platonic soulmates, world-building, asexual character, fix-it fic, original characters
Length: 47k
Summary:
Everyone is born with a heart line, a pigmented mark running from the heart down the left arm to the palm, which turns color when the person comes of age, telling them when it is time to seek their soulmate. Red indicates a romantic love, while blue is for platonic "heart-friends", as the minstrels called it.
Uther had always told Arthur to ignore his heart line, that it wouldn't matter who his soulmate was; princes did not marry for love, after all. If was lucky, he'd be able to keep her as a mistress, so long as he did not get any children with her. Uther hated magic and would have urged Arthur to ignore the heart line anyway, if he could.
Arthur wasn't sure his soulmate was really a woman despite Uther's assumptions. But Arthur's heart line hadn't even come into its full color yet, which meant he hadn't come of age in the eyes of the gods, despite being named crown prince by Uther. So it really didn't matter: whoever his soulmate was, he wasn't yet ready to meet them.
Then one day his heart line comes in, and it's neither red nor blue.

Title: truth and ideals (and the fallen in love).
Author: michellejjones
Fandom: Pokemon Black and White
Rating: PG
Pairing: N/Touko
Warnings: Pokemon death, mild violence
Other notes: outside PoV, rivals to lovers, worldbuilding
Length: 9k
Summary:
The patience behind her gaze throws him off; The silent wisdom throws him off even more. Her sentence is short, and simple, but she packs so much power and love and intelligence behind it, that N stops moving for a second, stops moving just long enough for Snivy to laugh haughtily before stalking back to his trainer.
"Just because I raise Pokemon differently than you," Touko says slowly, eye contact never wavering, "Does not mean I love them any less."
N's jaw drops, processing her words and then processing her voice: It's pretty.
She bows her head at him, ever-respectful, and goes back to being silent. After a brief pause, the argument between he and Cheren -with the occasional snide comment from Snivy- resumes. When the confrontation is over, it's like Touko has never even spoken, and N almost forgets her words.
Almost, but not quite.

May. 6th, 2019 10:17 pmTitle: waterlogged (red blue, green)
Author: lein
Fandom: My Hero Academia
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Midoriya/Todoroki
Warnings: mild angst
Other notes: soul mates, au, episode-based, worldbuilding
Length: 9k
Summary: Izuku has never been one to curse but the only way to describe himself as his mother hugs him goodbye that morning, is royally fucked.
He’s really, truly glad no one in their class has a mind-reading quirk because from the minute his feet touched warm sand, his mind has been screaming in tune to the same famous classical overtures Tenya listens to when they study together. Occasionally, the music pauses just long enough for his brain to point out observations about Shouto that make Izuku want to stick his head under the waves and just breathe in.

Meta essay on Writing
May. 1st, 2019 10:29 pmThe Hidden Layers of Every Novel (and Why They Should Stay Hidden) by Meg Elison
Like Charlie Jane Anders, every writer has a vast, secret reserve of everything that went into a novel. Sometimes, it’s as simple and concrete as a notebook or a series of concordance files or a lot of notes in Scrivener. Most of the time, it’s a vast network of experiences, influences, and inspirations, some of which aren’t plainly and consciously known to us. Sometimes, this work can be shared for the benefit of completionists and obsessive fans. But I believe that Charlie Jane’s approach of keeping the water level high and keeping the notebook to herself is the correct impulse.
When readers get too deep below the surface, the waters get murky. Sometimes it can be instructive and fascinating, like The Silmarillion. Other times, though, we end up with the post-Potter revelations of J.K. Rowling. The part of the iceberg that’s below the water can tear the belly out of your ship and sink your ability to enjoy what’s published. Give it a little space and let it awe you on its own terms.
This is part of a series called "Writers on Writing," which is always fun. This author argues that we shouldn't necessarily release all our notes and drafts and such, beyond the published work.
Which is an interesting thought, because, by virtue of studying Literature in college, we read a lot of that background material, especially for dead authors.
It's intersting to think that behind-the-scenes and deleted scenes and director's cuts are a big part of movies/filmmaking fandom. Is writing that different?
