Title: Glitch

Author: simplestardust

Fandom: Les Misérables

Rating: PG-13

Pairing: Enjolras/Grantaire + background pairings

Warnings: discussion of dubcon relating to soulmates, domestic violence, stalking, prejudiced behavior, background character death, alcoholism, child abuse/neglect, self-loathing, political suppression

Other notes: AU, modern day, world-building, soulmates, vignettes, multiple PoV, minor characters, unrequited love, friendship, politics, social change, viva la revolution

Length: 40k

Summary:

If there was one person, just one, who would be a glitch in the system, of course it would be Éponine Thénardier. Of fucking course.

Soulbonding was a fact of life. You met your soulmate, and that was it, you were soulbonded and you got your tattoo. Or that's what Éponine had always thought, until she soulbonded with Marius and he didn't soulbond with her.

Grantaire would rather just pretend he'd never soulbonded with anyone in the first place. Especially not with the idealist who was leading a campaign against soulbonding laws and refused to look at his own soulmate tattoo in protest.

So, I was writing a rec for a soulmate fic, and I wrote, “you know, I really like this fic because it messes with the whole soulmate idea. I don’t really like the soulmates trope too much, although there are a few fics I could recommend that also mess with the idea.”

About two hours later: Well, this is not a short list at all.

Also: I guess I do like soulmate fics?

Well, I guess it’s more that I like it when authors set up the world rules for a soulmate universe, then proceed to mess with it. Or they set up a world where having a soulmate is actually really super annoying in some way.

At any rate, I have a full rec list now.

Unfortunately, I can't quite figure out the best way to spoiler tag these. Most of them have a twist ending of some sort. Sorry.

What Defines a "Good" or "Bad" Adaptation? by Amber Troska

To hope that a favorite novel or story will come directly to life via moving pictures is something we keep clinging to—but it never really does, not in the way I think many fans desire and demand. Some of the most faithful adaptations are often failures, mostly because of the soullessness that can occur when creators are unable to bring their own vision to the material; attempting to reproduce someone else’s work has got to drain some of the magic out of the whole process, leaving a vacuum. Meanwhile, others make additions, edits, and eliminations that certain hardcore fans hate but that most people accept as necessary, like those made in the Lord of the Rings trilogy or the Harry Potter films (and while they aren’t SFF, I’d add most classic literature adaptations to this pile as well).

And what does it mean when we say that an adaptation is “better” than the original? Is it still an adaptation, or is it something separate and new?

This could totally be a discussion post in and of itself.

6 Ways That Fanfiction makes Your Writing Stronger by Vivian Shaw

Well, this is a list article, so picking one quote is hard...

Except.

Here's the last point:

Critique

Following on from reaction, perhaps the most important thing you can learn from writing fic is how to take criticism. The critique you receive from commenters may not actually be of any practical use—but that doesn’t mean a slew of omg I love this! comments don’t have their value. It’s enormously different from the kind of feedback you can expect to receive on original fiction: at best, you’ll get to meet with your class or writing group once or twice a week, perhaps, and read part of a story, and get the reaction of a handful of people who are required to give you their responses. When you put your fic up on the internet, literally anyone who has access can read it and tell you what they like and don’t like, or that you suck and should feel terrible, or that you changed their life. It’s a completely different paradigm, and it allows you, the writer, the opportunity of practice in deciding how and when you want to pay attention to your critics.

...which, ah. I've seen waaaaay too much con/crit wank lately to take this the way the author intends. Ideally, yes, you can get criticism that helps you, but realistically...yeah....

Warnings: angst, break-up/divorce, unrequited love, depression

Other notes: post-canon, canon divergence, hurt/comfort, clones

Length: 12k

Summary: The safest thing to do, perhaps, is to let the clone die. Destroy the pod, if possible. They can't be sure what they'll wake up.

But Keith is here. That changed everything.

Keith had cared about Shiro - well, who he thought was Shiro, even after. Keith had cared about the clone back then, even knowing what he was, even knowing what he tried to do to their team, their family. Keith had told that clone that he-

Well, it’s March, so here’s a collection of female PoV fics I’ve enjoyed recently. It’s far, far from an exhaustive list, and a bit scattershot, if I’m honest. I kept trying to cut it down to a reasonable length but it just kept getting longer.

Really my main criteria were: a) from a female character’s PoV and b) interesting. So now I’ve got a lovely collection of fics about mothers and sisters and  aliens and warriors and royalty and survivors. Lots of survivors.

…apparently I’m bad with fluff fic, sorry.

Title: that song you sing for the dead

Author: brella

Fandom: Yu Yu Hakusho

Rating: PG

Pairing: none, gen

Warnings: minor character death

Other notes: grieving, cultural differences, family, friends,

Length: 23k

Summary: “What do you want?” Yukina asks, impartially, for she knows that the answer likely has nothing at all to do with her and no longer childishly fantasizes that anything ever does.

Hiei struggles with the simple question—anything like it has always seemed to leave him in a quandary. He has made no move to sit down; then again, Yukina has certainly not invited him to. His posture is rigid, poised to flee at any moment.

“Kurama told me that the koorime Rui died,” he explains at last, “and that you’ve gotten it into your head that you wish to return to the Glacial Village as some sort of ill-advised commemoration. Is that true?”

This entire article is great:

On The Cult of Originality: What Byzantine Literary Culture Can Tell us About Fanfiction by Arkady Martine

What are we going to do with the cult of originality? The set of pernicious beliefs that say: oh, all romances are the same, there’s always a happy ending, that can’t be real literature? Or, this book is full of tropes, it must be too commercial to be good? Or even: if you can’t write something entirely new, you aren’t writing real literature … and if you’re writing fanfiction, you must be ‘practicing’ until you’re ready to be original! I’m entirely sure most of you readers have heard—or even subscribe to—one or more of these beliefs about originality being a sign of artistic achievement. It’s an idea that’s baked into modern Western cultural criticism, particularly literary criticism.

And yet: we are surrounded by literature which is not original and which is successful, enjoyed, and persistent.

It is a little more on the academic side, but still quite readable.

Title: Killing Elvis

Author: David Hines

Fandom: Alien

Rating: R (for violence)

Pairing: gen fic

Warnings: discussion of taxidermy, dissection, experimentation on a living creature, canon-typical violence

Other notes: original characters, dark comedy, epistolary fic, social media, inter-office politics, incredibly tense fics

Length: 8k

Summary:
Dr. Liu,

Got your final report yesterday on Project LV-426. I'm amazed. Great work all around. It's been forwarded to the Chair, our friends at the Pentagon, the Defense Appropriations Committee, and DARPA. The acid-resistant armor is something that should really catch their eye.

We're expecting some big grant money from this.

Burke

Burke,

Did you read even the executive summary of my report? There are some interesting biomaterials that we could work with, but I stressed, multiple times, that this creature is far too dangerous to even consider using in military research projects. It's aggressive, stupid, vicious, aggressive, impossible to train, and did I mention aggressive?

. . .their limbs work on hydraulic principles and operate under pressure, which is why they splurt like a popped water balloon when they get hit in those Marine camera feeds we saw. A slight wound to a limb takes them right the hell out of commission, and now your troops have to deal with an insanely aggressive and stupid xenomorphic K-9 unit that oh by the way IS BLEEDING ACID.
