Fic rec list - Stories that play with soulmate tropes

So, I was writing a rec for a soulmate fic, and I wrote, “you know, I really like this fic because it messes with the whole soulmate idea. I don’t really like the soulmates trope too much, although there are a few fics I could recommend that also mess with the idea.”

About two hours later: Well, this is not a short list at all.

Also: I guess I do like soulmate fics?

Well, I guess it’s more that I like it when authors set up the world rules for a soulmate universe, then proceed to mess with it. Or they set up a world where having a soulmate is actually really super annoying in some way.

At any rate, I have a full rec list now.

Unfortunately, I can't quite figure out the best way to spoiler tag these. Most of them have a twist ending of some sort. Sorry.

Well, it’s March, so here’s a collection of female PoV fics I’ve enjoyed recently. It’s far, far from an exhaustive list, and a bit scattershot, if I’m honest. I kept trying to cut it down to a reasonable length but it just kept getting longer.

Really my main criteria were: a) from a female character’s PoV and b) interesting. So now I’ve got a lovely collection of fics about mothers and sisters and  aliens and warriors and royalty and survivors. Lots of survivors.

…apparently I’m bad with fluff fic, sorry.

This is a short list of unbearably tense fics. Fic that kept me glued to my screen, made my heart race, and left me really, really worried about the health and/or mental wellness of the lead characters.

Click on my reviews for more detailed warnings if you need. Apparently murder mysteries tend to make me tense, so they are a little over-represented here.

When the Buffalo Bill killings start, FBI trainee Clarice Starling is sent to interview him, and Hannibal has his interest piqued. But it’s not for reasons anyone would suspect, and as usual, his motivations are all about Will. A remix of Silence of the Lambs, where Clarice finds herself occupied not only with catching Buffalo Bill, but with unraveling the mystery of what exactly happened to Will Graham. And Hannibal knows more than he’s letting on about both.

    “It isn’t likely they’ve left,” Freddie explains, eyes trailing over Molly’s hands as she sets the mugs down and pours their coffee. “Jack Crawford is looking for them in Florence. Hannibal’s ex-psychiatrist turned up a week ago missing a leg. You tell me what continent they’re on.”

    The mug Molly is holding clatters against the counter top loudly, and coffee sloshes everywhere.

    “Excuse me?” Molly finds herself laughing, sharp voiced and flabbergasted.She turns again, enough to see Freddie, smirking and staring back at her from the kitchen table.
