Summary: Yuuri had never thought that Soulmates are needed, and finally someone agreed with him.

So many soulmate AUs. I would say they don’t generally interest me, except that I have read a lot. So many.

All I’ve decided is that I like the soulmate AUs that mess with the formula somehow. Like —

Ok, I could list several fics that play with the ideas of soulmates, but, by nature, each one would have some amount of spoiling. Because if I explain the twist — well, you know, that’s the twist. Tell you what, I will put a list ~~at the very bottom of this rec~~ in a separate post and I will try to be only mildly descriptive.

Back to this fic, though. You know, after reading all those many many soulmate fics, this is pretty much the one I feel would be closest to my own ideas. It’s interesting to think about — I don’t particularly believe in soulmates, but, if you lived in a world with physical proof of soulmates, like, wouldn’t you kind of have to believe it? Would not believing in soulmates be more like being an atheist or a flat earther?

But, then again, beliefs tend to be molded by experience. My parents divorced. One of my best friends’ parents have been together since like the dawn of time. If I’ve seen more failed relationships, been in more failed relationships, I suppose it makes sense that soulmates don’t appeal to me.

I also like how most of the issues Yuuri and Victor list are things I’ve seen in other fics. Celebrity stalking? Choosing to cover your mark? Yup yup.

Shoot, I’m already starting to rec other fics.

Ah. This fic is just so — smooth. It’s short and quick and everything just works. Kind of like how Yuuri and Victor work. Seamlessly, effortlessly —

Oh. Oh. Of course. Certainly, this is fated. This must be my soulmate fic. That's why I’m having such a hard time pinpointing why I like it. I just do. This is exactly how I’d see myself reacting in a soulmate universe. I am soulmates with this fic.

I do love this:

Yuuri hummed. So what if the universe seemed to think Viktor was a perfect man, Yuuri had kind of already noticed that half through the evening. What a useless mark.

That actually brings up an interesting chicken-and-egg issue: do you fall in love with your soulmate because you’re approaching them with the idea that of course you’ll fall in love? Or is it just like how Yuuri and Victor are here — they just click together, like they’re supposed to be together whether or not they notice the marks or not.

Also, Phichit and Yuri getting increasingly offended in the background always makes me laugh.

Yeah, after making some notes on soulmate fics I’m gonna a) have to make a totally separate post and b) probably do an entire month’s worth of soulmate fic recs. Ack.
