Ah, this fic. It’s amazing how someone wrote a fic where the characters are in constant communication, because soulmates can write on each other’s skin, and yet, somehow, they don’t communicate at all.
It’s brilliant, in a way, and also utterly sad. They literally end up in the same room together, scribbling notes to each other, but refusing to speak out loud.
Though — you know, there is something about talking with people when you can’t see their face. I’ve got a bit of social anxiety, myself, yet I find talking online to be fairly calming. There are a lot of people online who I could tell you their personality, bits of their history, but not at all what they look like. You always like to think, oh, I’m not prejudiced, but — I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been surprised by learning things about people before, for good and bad.
Of course, online, we tend to present a persona. We pick what we show.
So it’s interesting to see what our characters end up showing to each other — Bakugou is anger and bluster and, in a sweet way, he wants to beat the crap out of Todoroki’s abusive father; Midoriya tends to play peacekeeper and drags truths out into the open; Todoroki is guarded, even though the relationship he has with Red and Green is one of the few things keeping him sane and happy. And then, what they don’t show — that they care about each other, that they want genuine acceptance, that they want to keep talking at all.
Interesting idea, isn’t it — that even knowing you have a soulmate doesn’t actually make it any less terrifying to be vulnerable and start a relationship with someone(s)?
I dunno, I just like this fic. It’s simple and straight-forward but the details are what get to me. I love the titles — I don’t always remember fic titles, unless they’re particularly poetic or quotes I recognize. But I like these ones — actually getting a theme that works for all three fics as a whole and for the individual characters. Simple but neat.
I must admit, I don’t usually read this threesome pairing, but I did also enjoy Howitzer, which is much darker than this fic and involves PTSD and recovery.
