Title: Permission to Speak Freely
Author: Eldritchhorrors
Fandom: Star Trek ('09)
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Jim/Bones
Warnings: language, mostly. Brief discussion of horrible venereal diseases.
Other notes: Festivus, holiday fic
Length: 5k
Summary:
Bones has no truck with the holidays this year, until Kirk introduces him to a new one with one major feature: The Airing of the Grievances.
Bones. Airing his grievances.
Jim knew this would be an epic Festivus.
This is pretty hilarious. There are few things more fun than writing a grumpy, yet insightful Bones.
Which reminds me, I have unfinished fic of that I need to finish…
Anyway. Can I admit I’m not a huge Seinfeld fan? Blasphemy, I know. it’s not that I don’t laugh at it, I just–I’m not good with comedy that centers around embarrassment and people being dickish. Which is, I grant you, quite a bit of comedy. I dunno, I wince as much as I laugh.
But I can get behind Festivus. I’m not sure how well I’d do with the Airing of Grievances, myself–I’m generally too polite to say things, and the things I am too polite to say are—ah, best kept secret, I think. Though, I have had people point out my faults to me, and sometimes it’s actually kind of a relief to hear. There are dozens of essays out now about how people create the pseudo-fake-happy personas for social media and shy away from issues that are depressing or frustrating or nuanced. Sometimes you do just want to yell out in frustration.
I find myself fascinated by the not-confession at the end–not airing grievances is a sign of utmost affection. Most of the people I’m affectionate with are the ones who will air grievances frankly and frequently. But, then again, they’re also the ones who complain so much it ends up turning around and becoming–yup, a sign of affection.
Aish, I’m bumbling today. I’m not that good with reviewing comedy. This was a good fic. I laughed, I smiled, I enjoyed Bones’ keen insights.
(Looking for more fic recs?)
