Summary: On the very first time that Castiel manifests in front of Father Dean Winchester, he gets as far as “Rejoice, for you are blessed-” before Dean shoots him with a salt-loaded shotgun.

 

I thought this was a nice little fic. Admittedly I tend to prefer my priest kink to be a little more pagan, but I like how this author takes a somewhat more liberal view of the Judeo-Christian faith, and casts Dean as being a truly righteous man, not just one who blindly follows Church doctrine. I’m not really religious myself, so a more humanistic approach like that appeals to me. If you prefer something with a bit more of traditional bent, with lots of angst and self-recrimination, stay tuned.

I like Dean and Cas’s dynamic here. Cas is still saintly and devoted, Dean is still grumpy and somewhat self-loathing, and there’s a humor to them–Dean shoots Cas with a shotgun, accuses him of being a seductive demon, and Cas is amused. I also like that Cas forces Dean to think of his life beyond being a Hunter. It’s a brief moment, and yet it reminds me of what people really see in religion. Even when it’s just a group of people in a field, all of them are rapt with attention on Dean’s words, and he’s really trying to impart something positive to them, something meaningful, even if his own heart isn’t entirely in it. It’s a lovely scene, and it makes me think about priests as the leader of the flock, the confidant–someone you could genuinely look up to.
