This is almost an original character fic. Technically, the character being referenced is canonical–the large-eyed nurse who delivers baby Kirk at the beginning of the 2009 film. But it’s a purely visual reference–there’s no name, no character traits or personality. We know this character is from the medical field of Starfleet and she (presumably ‘she’) has larger-than-human eyes.

But from that, this author works up an entire culture, an alien way of life and a character’s struggle to adjust. Personally I find that pretty amazing. While I think yesterday’s entry, Like a Tear Cast in Stone, is overall a more mature and complex example of creating a character, this one is also an above-average effort. The lesson here is, original characters: if you put the effort in, the results can be amazing.
