Title: Teach Me Tonight
Author: ladyblahblah
Fandom: Star Trek (film, 2009)
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Kirk/Spock
Warnings: explicit sex (gay), angst, sexual “dysfunction”
Other notes: lessons, a story mostly told through sex, hurt/comfort
Length: Medium
Summary: During sex, Jim is so intent on pleasing his partner that he never actually reaches orgasm himself. Spock is out to change all that.
For some reason, I always mistake this for one of kyliselle’s fics. It’s got that same hurt/comfort vibe going to it.
I like that this is a story told almost entirely through sex. You can actual tell a lot about characters through sex–how they treat their partners, repression and openness, how knowledgeable and inventive they are. I think sex scenes can be underestimated. You have people who look at them and say, “it’s justsmut.” You have people who write sex badly, or fall back on cliches. Writing a good sex scene has more factors than it often gets credit for–like I said before, you can write character development or relationship development into the scene; you can block it out like a good action scene, with careful attention to moving clothes and body parts; you can focus on making your readers totally hot and uncomfortable. There’s definitely an art to the sex scene.
I find anorgasmia a bit of a fascinating subject. It’s not entirely like asexuality, and it’s a common enough occurrence in real life that I’m surprised we don’t see it in fic more often. I don’t know if I’d always put it under the umbrella of bad sex, although not being able to orgasm can certainly be a part of bad sex. I think I empathize with the frustration. There’s still this expectation in life that sex will be good, enjoyable for both parties, and end in orgasm. And that really doesn’t always happen. It’s actually kind of fine for only one person to orgasm, if that suits both parties. Sometimes only one person enjoys things. Sometimes you’re just not in the mood. I enjoy reading these well-written, but not perfect sex scenes.
Anyway, I should stop ranting about sex. I do go off on the weirdest tangents in these notes…
This fic goes quite perfectly with Stretch Out and Wait. I’d also throw out a rec for Come As You Are, which I’m honestly too tired to write up a separate entry for (sorry, Author-Anon).
(Looking for more fic recs?)
