Summary: If Kirk was a maths genius, and never took Pike up on the dare to do better, but still managed to get to Starfleet? This is what that would look like.

When I’m thinking of fics that have good original characters, the first one that pops to mind is always Like a Tear Cast in Stone, just for the sheer amount of work that goes into creating and focusing on the OC. Coming Home, which I rec'ced a few days ago, shows an excellent integration of OCs, minor characters, and major characters, managing to give all three an amount of development and fleshing out the world.

And then we get to this gem. I remember reading each update as it came out, more fascinated with every installment. Truthfully, I only vaguely remembered the first entry–the actual majority of the plot. I remembered a series of character-based vignettes, seeing the story again and again from new sets of eyes, and that’s what I fell in love with.

There’s a whole chapter dedicated to Kirk’s stepfather. Kirk hates him. Kirk’s mother hates him, Kirk’s brother hates him, Spock comes to hate him–hell, he hates himself. And yet, by the end of his piece, you feel this mixture of pity and sympathy for him, because he was put in a nasty, stressful situation, and he just wasn’t superhumanly strong enough to change anything. It’s quite brilliant, I think.

If you can’t find at least one chapter, one character, who blows you away, I’m not sure I can find a fic you’d like.
