Summary: Tony almost sacrifices himself to save his team – which awakens some of the Avengers to the fact that they’re not done becoming a team. After this they decide they must become more in order to survive and support each other. Consulting Tony about this change isn’t strictly necessary.

So, I was browsing some forum or other, and one of the latest posts had the simple question, “what is your bulletproof kink?”

I don’t know that there’s any particular term for mine, but I’ve seen it several times: you take a character who is cold or self-destructive or refuses to admit that he’s unhappy, tied him (or her) up, and basically sex them up until they break down and have to face the fact that they have emotions, that they are loved, that they don’t have to keep up the facade of indifferent or uncaring all the time.

I’ve read it just about everywhere from Gundam Wing to Star Trek. I’ve ever rec'ced it a few times before–Tuition, of course, and Like a Thrift Store Jacket, and Jeeves and the Indelicate Indecency. It’s some odd hybrid of BDSM and hurt/comfort, and evidently I’m not the only person who finds it hot.

This fic–well, admittedly, in some ways it goes a bit further with the kink than I enjoy, but at the same time, there are so many little moments that just line right up with my headcanon. It struck me a while ago that Bruce could make an excellent Dom. I think his obsession with control, desperate not to hurt anyone but still having this deep-seat desire to lash out, could be transferred to a Dominant mindset. He’s always trying so very hard to be small, unnoticed, ignored, and, in my mind, someone who is a genius, who wants to help, who was willing to try and make himself a super soldier–somehow I see him as someone who would chafe at the charade, eventually. He tries to pretend to be submissive, but inside he wants to let loose. It’s all metaphorical, but it could make for an excellent kink fic. So seeing Bruce in full-on Dom mode here fascinates me.

Adding JARVIS as a semi-participant was an interesting choice. I’ve seen, hmm, maybe one or two other short fills with JARVIS/Tony. It’s fascinating how JARVIS seems to be, well, kind of ‘into’ the proceedings, and yet he’s still detached by virtue of being bodiless. It’s an odd sort of relationship that I could stand to see more of.

I also like how Steve gets to avoid the shy virgin stereotype, and show off a bit of his planning ability. I don’t think Avengers has fully shown Cap as the leader, the tactician. Again, it’s taking the characteristics I associate with Cap and transferring them to a sexual context. Not sure I agree with the assessment of Cap being quite so rough, but there is a running theme of all three of them purposefully being more controlled, more exacting, for Tony’s benefit.

Thor…actually ended up just about how I expected.

The only thing that really surprised me–well, aside from the sounding, which reminded me I should really read tags before I read fic–was that Tony seems to pass out after sex quite a bit. It became unintentionally funny towards the end.
