Summary: When Watson is kidnapped, Holmes and Mary must come to an accommodation.

 

While I certainly enjoy the more smutty takes of Holmes/Watson/Mary, I have to admit that from a plot and character perspective, this is the fic that strikes me as most realistic. Holmes and Mary only make peace because both of them love Watson, and it takes an extraordinary situation to get them to finally make peace.

I adore how strongly Mary is portrayed. She gets treated better here than she does in canon, even managing to impress Holmes. It’s not because she gets violent or seductive or even wildly clever, like Irene might. It’s just hard work, unquestioning loyalty, and willingness to put herself in danger. It seems like a quieter show of strength, but she’s easily the strongest character here.
