Everyone knows those fics, written between seasons or just after cliffhangers, brilliant but doomed to be AU once the show goes in a completely different direction.

About a year ago, the various Sherlock Holmes fandoms were haunted by one word: Reichenbach. We knew Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock would face his Moriarty, and we knew the BBC Sherlock would have a Fall waiting for him. So variations on how Sherlock and his nemesis would meet their ends was at a high point.

This is a brilliant AU. It’s not always a fun read, but it’s intense. There’s darkness here, and a grey morality. This is about blood and death and violence and, along with all that, a deep, abiding love and constant reminders of the lengths John is willing to go to to protect Sherlock. Wonderful read.
