Summary: In his final year, Spock briefly meets Kirk at the Academy Winter Ball. One day, many years later, the man who made a lasting impression on Spock assumes command of the Enterprise.
I sometimes feel a little out of place in the Kirk/Spock fandom, because, while I adore the two of them in classic Trek, I actually enjoy Spock and Uhura in the new films, and Kirk and Bones. I think there are some key differences in characterization between the two sets of Kirks and Spocks that end up affecting how I see them. So, Kirk/Spock isn’t my end-all, be-all OTP, and sometimes I honestly get just a little tired of reading them be everyone else’s. I love them, but my lord I’ve read so many fics of their epic bond that it’s a bit overwhelming.
That said, this is an ideal fic for showing why I like Kirk and Spock in the classic series. You get a nice look into Spock’s psyche, the way he finds himself attracted to Kirk for being so charismatic, so sociable, so headstrong and noble. I admit I have a personal bias here, since, being a bit more quiet and withdrawn myself, I’m also fairly fascinated by people who are extroverted. Yet we also get a good show of why Kirk is attracted to Spock–his quiet strength, his perseverance and his keen eye for detail.
The set-up of this fic is “shamelessly romantic,” as the author herself notes. And, really, it is–meeting on one night and still holding that candle a decade and a half later is wonderful to read, even if the cynical parts of my heart are sneering.
So, really, if I had to pick yet another “Kirk and Spock are destined for each other” fic, this is honestly a great one.
