Title: The Comfort of Adversity
Author: Kantayra
Fandom: Smallville

Summary: They say that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, yet expecting different results. Lex had become resigned to this maxim, until a family emergency brought Clark and Conner to him for help, perhaps this time to stay.
My thoughts:
Ah, the thing with binge-reading in a fandom is, you end up with so many stories. It was a bit easier when I started this blog, because I had a huge backlog of stories, so I could arrange them by theme or find some other way to not spend an entire week in one fandom. I do enjoy showing several varieties of fic from a single fandom, but at the same time, I do hate to bore anyone who might not like that fandom or pairing for weeks on end.
(Huh. All this time and ‘fandom’ has never been added to my spellcheck dictionary. Time to remedy that.)
So we continue out look at fail!dads Lex and Clark, and their brilliant son, Connor.
This one is a marvelous blend of crack and angst. I was making myself a shortlist of fics to re-read for writing recs, and I did remember one where Ma Kent had died. I’d completely forgotten, however, just how brilliantly Clark and Lex end up sparring by the end of this fic. Behold:
Clark just shook his head, conceding the point. “Fine, not the Cadmus thing. Then, give up…” He thought for a moment. “Death rays.”
Lex blinked. “I don’t…”
“Come on, Lex. There is no way you can justify building death rays. Other than…”
“But they’re so…cool.”
Clark glared at him.
…
“And, really, it all depends on how you define ‘death ray’.”
“Lex, you’re been a supervillain for how many years now? You know what counts as a death ray and what doesn’t.”
“It’s like pornography in that, is it?”
Oh, where to start? Excellent humor and conversations, relationship negotiation–how often do you see that outside of well-written BDSM fics?–cute family escapades, and, possibly the best–a relationship that is truly love/hate, where you know these characters care about each other, in spite of all the fighting they keep doing. You believe the love, you believe the hate. And neither emotion magically cancels out the other.
I’d also highly recommend Reconcilable Differences by if you enjoyed this story or Devil’s Deal from yesterday. You get more fierce!father Lex. I should warn you that Reconcilable Differences has Connor getting grievously injured as the focal point, though, so if having background character death bothered you, maybe take the rec with a grain of salt.
(Looking for more fic recs?)
