Summary: They have done this twice before, at other camps. Steve knows that Bucky is slightly ashamed that he still throws up.
I’m terribly fond of alternate universes and what-if stories. Marvel seems to enjoy them too–it’s canon (well, as canon as AUs ever are) that a female!Tony married Steve and they avoided the entire Civil War thing. I’ve heard that there’s also some AU or What If? comic where Captain America liberates young Erik from the concentration camps and he goes on to be far more like Charles than the Magneto we know, but I haven’t found confirmation of that.
Still, it is a fascinating idea, isn’t it?
Of the two, I like “Stirrings” a bit better. Both stories, however, make good use of multiple points of view. The details are really lovely–Raven’s fear of going to school, Steve’s earnest way of confronting anti-mutant sentiment, the way Erik explains Steve and Bucky’s relationship in a time where homosexuality wasn’t allowed. I remember all those small bits like my own headcanon.
