Summary: A look into the mind of Bobby Hobbes during Flowers for Hobbes.
This is a brilliant, painful read. It tends to remind me of a depressive episode. You’d think that would be highly unpleasant. It is, to an extent–this is not a story I can read while depressed, angry at myself and the world–but at the same time, it’s so well-written, so frenetic. You are watching poor Bobby fall apart right in front of your eyes.
It’s deliciously brutal and vicious.
I think everyone has days in their lives where the stress and pain just gets to be too much, and suddenly you find yourself turning vicious–why should you have to care about other people, why should you have to be stuck where you are, why can’t you just do what you want, when you want and fuck everyone else because you want to feel good for once. And then you eventually snap out of it and feel guilty and even a bit horrified at how dark your thoughts became.
Hopefully other people have days like that. Otherwise I might need to ask myself some serious questions about my mental health.
I always found the epilogue pretty heartbreaking, when Bobby realizes he could have saved Darien, but he was too far gone to do it. That intense frustration both of them have, the anger both of them have to fight down–it’s delicious angst, just delicious.
You know, thinking this over, this is almost Bobby gone quicksilver mad. Now I’m wondering how a partnership between smart!psycho!Bobby and quicksilver madness psycho!Darien would work out. That would be a hell of a dark fic.
