Summary: Aziraphael and Crowley are a new breed of angel.
Another gorgeous, loving story, and one that takes on a popular trope in angelic (well, supernatural in general) fandom–when you fall in love with someone who is not the same species or being or type as you are, would you be willing to be turned, or converted, or fall, to be with them? That’s one of those things that irks me with the Twilight saga–the way the lead character seems to be so insistent that she be turned into a vampire, without really thinking it through. But that might just be my own bias. I grew up reading Anne Rice novels, and there was always so much angst about turning people (well, excluding times when it was done to save someone’s life, or piss someone else off, or out of ignorance…okay, I just undid my whole argument there.) I just ache so badly for Aziraphale here, for him being so scared and yet wanting so much.
On a semi-related note, it took me four days to realize I was spelling Aziraphale’s name wrong. I’d read before that the suffix -el means ‘one who shines in light,’ or something to that effect, which is why so many angelic names (Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Castiel, etc) end in -el. But, no. Aziraphale. I wonder if that’s something like theatre? I’ve seen various people write that Lucifer’s angelic name might have been Lucifel. It’s sort of become my headcanon now, even though the actual Hebrew used to refer to him is Heyel. I like Lucifel better.
