Summary: The Apple Pie Life is a slow process, but Dean and Cas are getting there—until Cas is called for battle and Dean is forced to wait.
I think this fic is a little bit more in line with my idea of how a Dean and Cas domestic fluff end would go – a ton more angst and offscreen violence, some long-suffering loyalty on Dean’s part, and Cas happily sacrificing some of his angel mojo to be with Dean.
I just have a thing for long distance relationships and loyally waiting. And it’s exactly the sort of thing Dean would do, I think–he’s the type who either forms these deep, life-long attachments or feels next to nothing. The scene where they confess without actually confessing because they’re about to be separated hits me hard. That, ‘we could have been so much happier all this time if either of us had tried to be more than “content” or “fine” or “alright.”’ It’s a sentiment that hits a bit too close to home.
Him and Cas living out their first winter on a poor mattress with crappy blankets is somehow incredibly intimate and sweet. For some reason the in love and in poverty things always reminds of the old O. Henry story, The Gift of the Magi. It’s like, I know living in poverty is the furthest thing from romantic possible, but somehow the idea of having love, even without money, is still something that seems so good I wish it was true.
Oh, and kissing the letter. My heart, it fluttered at that scene.
(Looking for more fic recs?)
